A Case of Congenital Varicella

Abstract

|
Maternal varicella is rare, occuring in only 5 cases per 10,000 pregnancies. One fourth of the infants born to mothers with varicella in the 3 weeks before delivery will develop congenital varicella (within 10 days of birth). However only those
infants
who develop the from 5 to 10 days after delivery(maternal rash up to 4 days before delivery) will lack the transplacental transfer of maternal antibody. These infants have a 30% mortality, any infant who develops the rash up to 4 days after
delivery can
be expected to have maternal antibody and survive.
We experienced a case of congenital varicella in a 10 day-old female infant who was born from varicelia infected mother. Symptoms of mother developed 2 days prior to delivery and she had been exposed chickenpox e weeks previously. The infant was
treated
by 5 day acyclovir. There was no specific complication.
Authors also made a brief review of literatures.
